Our Design Criteria and Requirements for the Ideal Turnout and Track Building Fixture.

. . .

ONE. ONE COMPLETE FIXTURE THAT CONTAINS ALL THE TOOLS NEEDED.

No host of specialized extra tools to buy,  to file, bend or solder each different part. Even better, a Fixture for making a turnout without having to do any skilled craftsmanship, filing, bending or soldering at all.

TWO. A FIXTURE THAT DOES THE WHOLE JOB.

A full Beginning-to-End Fixture that builds a completely finished entire realistic turnout or track section. All the Ties, Tie plates, Rail, Frog, Throw bars, Guard Rails made the right size and shape, precisely detailed and postioned in exactly the right places. Not merely a "third hand" rail holding tool that only helps make a part built ttrack skeleton, that still needs the rest of its ties laid later by hand, and can't be detailed or improved beyond its most basic specificication.

THREE. THE SAME FIXTURE BUILDS STRAIGHT OR ANY REASONABLE, BUT INFINITELY VARIABLE RADIUS, CURVED TURNOUTS AND TRACK.

A Fixture that does not  limit your track plans to straight turnouts, or a few fixed radii at much greater cost for each. You should not have to buy whole additional expensive fixtures for each slight curve variation.

FOUR.  LOWEST POSSIBLE  COST FOR THE FIXTURE UP FRONT - THEN JUST THE MINIMUM DIFFERENCE COST TO SIMPLY ADD OTHER SIZES AND TYPES OF TRACK, TURNOUTS, SLIPS, ETC.

No need to buy a whole new fixture for every different turnout size or type. Have simple add-on options instead, to make other sizes of turnouts, different types of track, etc., for far less. Even better, have the same option still work iin the usual range of rail sizes, such as code 55, code 70 and code 83

FIVE. , PRECISION , LIFE LONG,  DURABLE CONSTRUCTION. No soft parts to be worn away by filing, or repeated use. Easy clean up, with no narrow places to accumulate hardened residues and damaging corrosion. Complete range of spare parts in case of any accidental damage.

And that is why we designed and manufacture the . . .

THE "SWITCH-WORKS" ALL-IN-ONE HO TRACK AND TURNOUT BUILDING FIXTURE:

You can go directly to the Switch-Works Fixture Details and Ordering page by clicking on the Link below:

But if you'd like to see how well we did to meet all the requirements, then carry on reading down this page first.

. . .

ONE. ONE COMPLETE FIXTURE THAT CONTAINS ALL THE TOOLS NEEDED.

No host of specialized extra tools to buy,  to file, bend or solder each different part.

DONE: All Switch-Works Fixtures contain all the jigs, spacers and dowels needed for a particular turnout or track section.  And include either push-pins for the "Economy BYOB",  (Bring your own Base), version as above,

or magnetic clamps and a base for the "Pro" version (as shown above).

In addition we provide the two glue syringes and needles for all versions, so you can get to work right away.

All you need to provide are the two recommended types of glue, a flat file to clean up and true cut rail ends and a good rail cutter of your choice.

TWO. A FIXTURE THAT DOES THE WHOLE JOB.

One that builds a completely finished entire realistic turnout or track section. All the Ties, Tie plates, Rail, Frog, Throw bars, Guard Rails, Details,  the right size and shape, precisely postioned in exactly the right places. Not just a basic and part built skeleton, that still needs most of its ties laid later by hand, and can't be detailed or improved beyond its basic specification.

DONE:   All the various parts can even be pre-painted or stained, as the fixture assembly process will not damage any of the finishes.

The Switch-Works Fixture will first lay every Tie perfectly in place, glued onto a tough plastic support base sheet with just the right amount of slight random variation that occurs on the prototype. It will then position all the different types and sizes of Tie and Slide Plates, in precisely in their individual right positions. FInally the laid Ties and Tie Plates then provide precison locating slots to hold the various Rails,Throw Bars, Point Hinges, Points and Frog in the right places and exactly to gauge as they are simply glued , slid or sanpped in place, as appropriate. With minimal wiring, only if the frog is to be powered , the turnout is finished and RTR ready to ballast and lay.

THREE. THE SAME FIXTURE BUILDS  STRAIGHT OR CURVED TURNOUTS AND TRACK OF ANY RADIUS AND RAIL CODE.

No need to limit your track plans to a few fixed radii and a single rail code, then have to buy whole additional expensive fixtures for each slight variation.

DONE:   To make an any radius, Curved Version of a Turnout or Track Section, at the first building step, just lay the Ties onto a temporary tacky tape base, instead of the permanent regular base. Then build the turnout or track as normal, up to the step at which the first main or stock rail is fixed down. Then instead, remove the part finished track, and curve it as desired, or to fit the eventual location in place. Then lay and fix the rest of the rails onto the curved set of ties and you will have a finished turnout or track section, that is curved exactly as you wish.

FOUR.  LOWEST POSSIBLE  COST FOR THE FIXTURE UP FRONT - THEN JUST THE DIFFERENCE COST TO MERELY ADD OTHER SIZES AND TYPES OF TRACK, TURNOUTS, SLIPS, ETC.

No need to buy a whole new fixture for every different turnout size or type. The same tool option makes its turnouts, track, etc., in all rail sizes from code 55, code 70 and code 83

DONE: Rather than make each variant a different large, single, fixed purpose only, base, the Switch-Works Fixture actually consists of a small expandable set of common parts that may be mixed to create many different useful configurations.

First we made the base and the jig working surface separate. Now you don't need to buy a duplicate expensive base for each different turnout size and type.

The one same base can be used for every plain track type, every turnout size, every rail code, and every frog style.

And with the "Economy BYOB" version , you can even supply your own inexpensive base, as simple as a flat plank of soft wood or Homasote.

But we didn't stop there!

To lower the cost even more, we deliberately made the turnout jig options as "flip-over" parts, so you don't need to pay double for completely unecessary separate "left hand" and right hand" copies of what are essentially the same size jig hardware."

FIVE. , PRECISION , LIFE LONG,  DURABLE CONSTRUCTION. No soft parts to be worn away by filing, or repeated use. Easy clean up, with no narrow places to accumulate hardened residues. Complete range of spare parts in case of any accidental damage.

DONE:  Every flat jig component and the base surface is precision industry manufactured from Stainless Steel Sheet. It won't corrode with age, change shape or size, or wear significantly, no matter how much repeated use it gets. No part needs to be filed, bent, soldered or ground against, to alter its accuracy. It's impervious to all normal solvents and does not have any deep crevices to accumulate any waste residues.

Every part is also carried as a spare, so any loss or damage  can be quickly replaced or made good, for very little cost.
