PROTOTYPE THROW BARS AND HEEL BLOCK POINT HINGES
Even the Shortest Prototype Switches, as above, use Double Throw bars. You can also clearly see the prototype heel block point hinges, where the points are joined, and the closure and stock rails are firmly bolted together
Here, substituting ULTIMATE THROW BARS improves the realism of even an RTR MICRO-ENGINEERING TURNOUT.
PARTS FRETS FOR CODE 55 AND CODE 70/83 SOLDERABLE VERSIONS OF THE ULTIMATE THROWBARS and POINT HINGE COMBO KITS
The latest ULTIMATE THROW BAR AND POINT HINGE COMBO KITS now come in two versions. The ORIGINAL STAINLESS STEEL NON SOLDERED VERSIONS have small hooks in the second throw bar which fit in #75 drilled holes in the point rail bases. These allow the throwbars to work reliably almost indefinitely WITHOUT any bearings or soldering of any kind. The second throw bar allows you to exactly simulate the prototype dual rod appearance. In addition, this second bar performs the function of keeping the open switch rail pressed firmly against the operating throw bar, thus allowing the bars to be used with any type of drillable switch rails. - hinged (loose heels) or flexible (continuous).
THE FRETS OF THE SOLDERABLE VERSION ARE SOLID NICKEL SILVER and permit the second throwbar to be soldered to the point rails, thus obviating the need for the hook and drilling of the points. While working in exactly the same manner, the SOLDERABLE VERSION THROWBARS may be used with point rails that cannot be easily drilled.
These operating THROW BAR kits are intended for use with our own TURNOUTS, upgrading good quality RTR switches, or for improving traditional handlaid switches. With a little care and adjustment, they can usually even be added to existing laid switches in place.
The NON-SOLDERABLE VERSIONS HAVE PRE-DRILLED PLASTIC OPERATING UNDER-BARS, that the rods are glued into. THE SOLDERABLE VERSION have undrilled PCB material UNDER-BARS, but an accurate metal drilling template is included with every fret.
Different sizes are provided for different gauges and applications:-
The POINTS HINGES provided with kits ARE ALMOST EXACTLY TO SCALE AND ACCURATELY SIMULATE THE PROTOTYPE's "HEEL BLOCK HINGES". These are just simple "slip-on", non-moving, parts that should should operate reliably and almost indefinitely, once installed. The slightly different switch angles for 11 ft and 16 ft points are provided for, by having sets of hinges for both angles included on the frets.
 
THE THROWBAR SUPER-DETAIL OPTION (Now included as part of the points and throwbar detail pack below) IS AVAILABLE to help the model throwbars be as prototypically detailed and realistic as possible

The Stock Rail is NOT cut away AT ALL on a typical Real Switch. Instead, the Point Rail is UNDERCUT at an angle, so it fits OVER the Stock Rail Base, And the INNER side of the point is also tapered, so the FULL THICKNESS of the RAIL WEB is available to SUPPORT the WEIGHT of Locomotives.
On the Prototype, AN UNSUPPORTED CUT AWAY STOCK RAIL WOULD COLLAPSE UNDER THE WEIGHT OF A TRAIN. It is not realistic to use simplified points that are not undercut.
ALL THE STORES MODEL POINTS ARE PROPERLY THREE-WAY PLANED, WITH AN UNDERCUT, EVEN ON THE SMALLEST RAIL SIZES.
THE "TPSW3" COMPONENT FEATURED IN THE "MODEL RAILROADER" HAS BEEN UPGRADED INTO THE TWO EVEN MORE ACCURATE, BUT ALSO MORE ECONOMICAL "FROG SUPER-DETAIL SET", AND THE "POINTS AND THROWBAR" SUPER DETAIL SETS" (The latter as shown above). THESE FIT ALL RAIL SIZES AND NOW SUPER-DETAIL BOTH THE POINTS AND THROWBAR OF ALMOST ANY TURNOUT, NEW OR OLD, COMMERCIAL OR HAND-LAID.
These accurately provide, easy "stick-on" scale models of the Prototype "Riveted, Point Reinforcing Bars" which are always used to strengthen the finely planed weakened ends of real points
